Keep on walking

This weekend marks a month of stopping smoking and also just about a month of walking around the Savannah every single evening.

The not smoking part has done little to make me feel any better or worse so I am really not seeing the point of stopping but I must say I have come to relish the walking. One walk around is 3.5 km and I walk around at least twice but more usually three times and lately four. It seems like a lot but the final two rounds actually put me in a very relaxed state. It could be the endorphins or it might just be the 80s and 90s club music I have blaring on my headphones. I strongly suspect the latter. In any case, it sure beats a gym.

My next step is to introduce some minimum looks standard for being allowed to walk around. I walk in a counterclockwise direction and I swear it is not a pretty experience – quite literally – with about 90% of the people. Also, if you are an overweight man or woman please, in the name of all that is holy, walk and don’t run. The sight of flab flying up and down is not a pleasant one.

The perils of Spam

I know this showed up on my twitter feed here but I found it enormously horrifying that Spam has so many versions. As if the prospect of eating mystery meat were not enough you can now add even more questionable additives to it like “cheese”.

What amazes me even more is the fact that the price is truly ridiculous. You could buy a decent cut of meat or even three tins of corned beef for the price. Apparently the US community here in Cascade/St. Ann’s is from trailer parks in the Midwest or Hawaii – I can see no other reason for having such a display of overpriced bad food. Surely no T&T national would eat this muck?

One thing that disturbs me is that the variety of tinned fish is diminishing ( Canadian brands are vanishing here) but the Spam section is expanding. I think this might be yet another sign of End of Days.

That being said, on the same trip where I took this pic I decided to make split pea soup from scratch for the first time. I bought a bag of dried peas for about 75 cents Canadian and some onions and thyme. When I got home I invented a recipe and soaked the split peas in water in the fridge, caramelized some onions in an uncovered pressure cooker, added the peas, threw in some garlic and thyme and covered the cooker. Half an hour later I had the most delicious soup I have ever had ( after balancing with salt and pepper). Six servings of amazing soup for under $2 CAN. I think that beats Spam hands down.

With much of Trinidad flooding these days with the heavy ITCZ related rainfall – my walk around the Savannah this evening showed that we have more coming.

As I type this there are widespread reports of flooding across the island and the rain and lightning have started to affect Port of Spain. Thankfully, most people are safely in their homes by this time. I am still stuck in the office waiting to do a one hour call-in show from 8:30pm to 9:30pm.

At least I live only 6 minutes away.

The gifts keep coming

Still, it is really sweet of people to give little tokens. This one made my day.

Quick update from my phone

I bought an app for my Nokia that lets me blog from my phone so I am giving it a quick run. As much as I love my E series keyboard this entry will be short as it still a bit too fiddly to type on for long stretches.

I can report that I am on my third week on Champix and , as much as I am loath to admit it, it really works. I haven’t smoked a single ciggy for going on two weeks now. In what is a completely unrelated event I have also been walking 7 km most evenings, While I am sure there are health benefits the main advantage is just the thinking time. The mechanical act of walking seems to help me focus – mind you the eye candy on the walk is nice too.

Still, despite what the health Nazis say, I feel not one whit better. It must be said that I rue the fact I put smoking on hold just when I mastered the art of looking piss elegant while doing it.
