Two interesting looking documentaries about life in difficult places.

Thanks to @traceyctt on Twitter for referring me to this Art Threat look at two documentaries about life in Israel/Palestine and Uganda. I will be making an effort to track both documentaries down.

The Israeli documentary is City of Borders while the Ugandan film is The Kuchus of Uganda. Read the Art Threat article by Valerie Cardinal here.

This is how some people think in Uganda.

If you want to get angry about extreme stupidity this is the interview to watch.  Worse than terrorism is it? Gaining ground? Spreading like wildfire? Really? Via www.towleroad.com

A thinking Trinidadian writes about the ex-gay visit

Kevin Baldeosingh of the Trinidad Express is one of  my favorite local columnists and one of the more thoughtful. He is also a member of the Trinidad and Tobago Humanist Association and has been a guest on my program several times.  Today he wrote an insightful article on the subject of the ex-gay minister who visited Trinidad last week:

“Evangelical Christians and Catholics came together last week to lobby against homosexual relationships. The Emmanuel Community, Lawyers for Jesus, and the Hospital Christian Fellowship brought down an American pastor as their point man to give talks at various forums in Trinidad and Tobago. Philip Lee claims to have been a homosexual from 18 to 35 years of age, after which he became heterosexual. In his talks given over the past week, Lee asserted that no one was born homosexual and that gayness was “acquired behaviour”. This statement is not borne out by scientific research, however.

But can sexual orientation be changed? Psychiatrist Gerard Hutchinson, a professor at UWI’s Medical School, says, “The jury is still out. Probably not, but it can be masked. Men in their 50s and 60s are now coming out and admitting that they are gay in spite of marriage and children, so orientation does not necessarily equal action.”

Let your light shine

Thanks to my new blog friend Sambhav from India for finding this clip. Set in Thailand, this 2008  video seems to be  part of a Pantene: You Can Shine campaign. All I can say is it’s the most touching and positive hair commercial I have ever seen.  Don’t ever let the cruel taunts and negativity of others stop you from letting your inner light shine for the world to see.

Now excuse me, I have to get a Kleenex.

Saturday food for thought.

In checking my usual internet sources I came across a couple of sharable videos that I shall now post here. The first is a touching message for the It Gets Better Project from Bishop Mark Hanson who is the Presiding Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.  Like Anglican Bishop Sprong , whose manifesto I posted in an earlier entry, and unlike the rabid rhetoric of the religious right ( beat that alliteration!) , Hanson’ s message to kids is one of inclusion and love.

The other clip is a follow-up to the matter involving the hate-mongering disgrace to humanity called  Clint McCance – an Arkansas school board member. This is the man expressed puzzlement about the fuss over a bunch of dead f@@gots and suggesting he would wear purple only if all gay people killed themselves. While such things might be acceptable in Uganda or some other place where ignorance conspires to turn an entire nation into a hell hole, it has no place in the civilized world.  CNN’s Anderson Cooper who is the de facto patron Saint of the anti-bullying movement  took McCance to task as I posted earlier. He followed up on the matter with TV psychologist Dr. Phil.

And speaking of Uganda, and I was, here is a food-for-thought from a gay Ugandan blogger. Interesting to see how the internet has allowed the various hate incidents around the world to become interwoven into a global discussion.

More postings as the day goes on.

A new feel good video from Katy Perry

Katy Perry has released her new video Firework which is clearly meant to inspire kids who feel different, marginalized or victimized. Enjoy Firework and read more about the video at The New Civil Rights Movement site – complete with lyrics. The song is dedicated by Katy to the It Gets Better Project.

* Hint – keep an eye out for the 2:14 mark

As a side note. Vevo and Katy Perry’s record label if  you want to restrict embedding just say you want to fuck your client. What is the point really? You are getting exposure. Jerks.

Don’t get Andy Towle pissed off with you either…

When Andy Towle of  Towleroad.com uploads a post called  Watch: The Infuriating Iowa Bigot Nitwit Parade Marches On – you just know it is  going to be good. The interviewer in the clip is spot on too.

Box Turtle Bulletin on teenage suicide

One of my favorite online publications Box Turtle Bulletin has just published a most interesting article titled Suicide, Responsibility and the Teenaged Brain by Rob Tisinai. Given my feelings on the issue of kids being driven to suicide because of bullying and society’s ignorance I think it is a must read.

Anti-gay activists are working hard to duck responsibility for anti-gay bullying and teen suicides. These attempts occasionally veer into sheer lunacy, as when they claim gay teens are in despair because society is too accepting of homosexuality. But there’s one dodge I find particularly offensive. From the comments on NOM’s Facebook page:

The only people responsible for the suicides are the people that comitted them.

Nobody forces anyone to take his own life; ergo, only those who commit suicide are responsible.

Each person is responsible 4 their own actions. U make believe u r gay. God did not make u gay & He does not make u commit sucicide. nor does anyone else

I don’t know if gay is always a choice, or not. But suicide is ALWAYS a choice. The ultimate cop-out.

My friend Alvin marks the birth of a movement.

My very close friend Alvin - who is mad as hell.

We have had this  Ex-Gay minister here for a week and apparently the LGBT  community has reached a boiling point. A second  protest was held today at the University of the West Indies  for this vile and peculiar person to spout his misinformation. I assume that UWI will also be hosting the KKK when they arrive on these shores.

In any case the CAISO group sat there in their protest t-shirts which said:

HOMOSEXUAL AGENDA

  1. Buy Crix
  2. Spend time with family
  3. Work for equality

By all accounts it was all very peaceful.  Unfortunately for them my best friend Alvin was also there. He decided to stand up in the middle of the gospel meeting and ask the strange Pastor questions. I guess the pastor now knows that saying weird things to an audience in this part of the world is not the same as Uganda.

Alvin posted this on Facebook.

Today I witness first hand a “bully” disguised in a blanket called
religion as he tried to influence young folks into believing gay persons
will go to hell and they are Sinners who are the cause of spreading
diseases to mankind.
This former United Airlines flight attendant/homo (talk about flying the friendly skies) whose days living in San Francisco and, one would guess, wearing flowers in his hair; suddenly had a vision one night and the “Homosexual Chains” were broken. Now this brings several questions to mind.

1.Were the chains holding up a sling with you face up on it?

2. Were you doing a David Carradine at the time?

3.Was it a S&M routine gone bad or were you caught with Granma’s pearls again?.

Nevertheless some Bad Romance or Experience has made this poor soul into a self hating homo who is on a relentless pursuit to convince the world that Homosexuality can be cured and he’s living proof of it. Mind you if I was gay and looked like Phillip Lee I would hate myself so much that I also would start wearing polyester shirts and spread hate. Anyhows the born again Pastor not only passed judgment on those whose bedroom business is no concern of his and his flock of fools but went as far as to say that we are all rampant drug users who practice promiscuous sex and are trying to bring down the Church with our forbidden lifestyle.I am trying to find right now at least 1 Anti-Heterosexual group or religion but it seems we “Children Of God” are much too busy just trying to live our lives which may just be a great bother to Pastor’s like Lee and other Men of the Closet..sorry Cloth or just maybe they are missing out on that extra 10% of our salaries to help furnish penthouses for their boytoys and taking them on getaways to Ibiza .

Your rantings are not god’s word u ignorant red neck. And if that is what your ministry believe is salvation then drag me str8 to HELL. The messengers of HATE must not be allowed to spread propaganda to the young minds. Love yourself no matter if you’re Gay/Straight/Black/White/Poor/Rich . Do not ever think you are a Sinner because of who you choose to Love or have Sex with. We are no longer a silent minority ..Let your voices be heard..Be Proud of who you are..This is our time..SPEAK UP.

CAISO has published their own comprehensive take on the minister and his activities here.
