Libya – a tale of two flags

Libya now has two flags flying – the imaginative Gaddafi designed flag which is…well it is just green.

Seriously, for a falling leader that fancies himself a fashion maven and who is surrounded by tailored female bodyguards, he could have done better.

And then we have the pre-Gaddafi flag adopted by the revolutionaries and now the de facto flag of liberated Libya.

Anyone with any sense would be on the side of the people who know a good flag when they see it. Fingers crossed that this will soon return to being the flag of a new and changed Libya.

Globe and Mail: Canada imposes wide range of sanctions against Libya

The Globe and Mail reports that Canada’s second lamest PM in recent history ( only because Mulroney lasted longer) has finally indicated what Canada plans to do about Libya’s regime.

“Mr. Harper said Canada will go beyond the UN resolution.

“Our government will impose an asset freeze on, and a prohibition of financial transactions with the government of Libya, its institutions and agencies, including the Libyan Central Bank.

“These actions will help restrict the movement of, and access to money and weapons for those responsible for the violence against the Libyan people.”

The 192-member UN General Assembly is meeting Tuesday to vote on a UN Human Rights Council recommendation to suspend Libya from the world organization’s top human rights body.

Mr. Harper said Mr. Gadhafi has betrayed his own people.

CNN: A cry in the night from Tripoli

Anderson Cooper’s  heartbreaking interview with an anonymous woman in Tripoli as she fears for her nation and her own life. Her appeal for the rest of the world to intervene and stop the carnage brought me to tears.

Apologies for the commercial at the beginning.

The Telegraph reports that Britain is poised to seize Gaddafi’s assets

The  Telegraph is reporting that the UK government is in the process of  rounding up the assets of the Libyan regime with an aim to forcing Gaddafi out in the most effective way possible – hitting him in the bank account.

“In total, the Libyan regime is said to have around £20 billion in liquid assets, mostly in London. These are expected to be frozen as part of an international effort to force the dictator from power. A Whitehall source said: “The first priority is to get British nationals out of Libya. But then we are ready to move in on Gaddafi’s assets, the work is under way. This is definitely on the radar at the highest levels.”

Let’s hope this is one more brick being pulled out from the foundations of  this ugly man’s regime.

SATIRE – Condensed version of Gaddafi’s speech today.

He went on for rather a long time but taking into account his general demeanor, the tone of his rant and the threats of death and destruction, this video pretty much sums up his speech.
