The Bonnie Hansen (At Burton High School) Make It Better Project

Excellent and very touching video by the kids at Burton High School in San Francisco. Excellent production values too.

“The GSA at Burton High School in San Francisco created a “Make it Better” video that features students and staff sharing how they are going to make Burton a better place for all students. This video was shared at a school wide cultural assembly. The school responded positively and cheered on the GSAers as they came out as gay or an LGBTQ ally, while they pledged to stand up to bullies and to make it better.”

Pink Shirt Day in Canada against bullying.

Canadian school kids observe Pink Shirt Day to raise awareness about bullying. The event started in Nova Scotia in 2007 as a show of solidarity by classmates for a kid who was bullied for wearing a pink polo shirt.  The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported on the event back then.

“Two Nova Scotia students are being praised across North America for the way they turned the tide against the bullies who picked on a fellow student for wearing pink.

The victim — a Grade 9 boy at Central Kings Rural High School in the small community of Cambridge — wore a pink polo shirt on his first day of school.

Bullies harassed the boy, called him a homosexual for wearing pink and threatened to beat him up, students said.

Two Grade 12 students — David Shepherd and Travis Price — heard the news and decided to take action.

“I just figured enough was enough,” said Shepherd.

They went to a nearby discount store and bought 50 pink shirts, including tank tops, to wear to school the next day.”

Global TV reported on this year’s observance ( several parts – sorry)

Wonderful that police and firemen are joining in too. Proud of Canada as always.

Kylie Minogue & PS22 Chorus

From their description:

“Get ready for something REALLY special!! Today the PS22 Chorus hosted a visit from the AMAZING Ms. Kylie Minogue, who made a special trip out to Staten Island to spend some time with the kids! Kylie has been a long time fan of PS22, tweeting about the kids on more than one occasion, so it’s safe to say that everybody was extremely psyched for this collaboration! Here the kids join Kylie on her mega-hit, “Can’t Get You Out Of My Head” which we recreated PS22 style! Kylie blew us away with her incredible vocals on this acoustic rendition! The kids sound haunting and yet somehow are having a blast at the same time! Super huge thanks to Kylie for an amazing day, as well as to Mr. Eberle for his amazing guitar work and to Ms. Lisa for her spectacular filming!! Make sure you catch the other video posted with Kylie & PS22 of “Put Your Hands Up” from her latest album APHRODITE !!!

Homeless LGBT youth – a sad story with some positive news.

It is a sad state of affairs that so many LGBT kids are thrown out of their homes simply because of who they are. This is probably the worst and most damaging sort of bullying – when a parent rejects their own child. The emotional repercussions can be devastating and life on the streets can be equally as damaging.

Happily  there are organizations in different countries that are working to give these kids dignity and allowing them to pick themselves up and live full and productive lives. The Albert Kennedy Trust in the UK is one such organization.

Give if you can and visit their website here.

PS22 Chorus and Ithacapella do Firework.

Too sweet.

“Today the PS22 Chorus rejoined forces with Ithacappella, the amazing a cappella men’s choir from Ithaca College with whom last year’s chorus performed “Fireflies” by Owl City back in 2010. This year, we got a bonus prize of Adiza, former PS22 student from back in the day, and current member of Ithaca College’s all-female a cappella group, Premium Blend! Soloing from the PS22 Chorus is Kurria, and what a debut!! The results are tremendous, and definitely the PS22 auditorium was ignited with musical fireworks this afternoon!!”

Good Advice

Ironic though it may be, my nephew, who is like my own son is being bullied  at school. Good advice from some good people.

And as I said on Facebook – I had nobody to protect me when I was being bullied but he does – namely me. It has to stop.  The world has to put up a unified face against bullying for whatever reason.  Because a kid is weaker or perceived to be LGBT. Whatever the reason – no kid deserves to be threatened. If you are a parent you are failing in your responsibilities if your kid is involved in bullying.

Let’s just put a stop to this.
