My Interviews With the Incredible Verna St. Rose-Greaves

I love few guests as I love Verna St. Rose -Greaves. She is also a friend and when my Dad passed away one of the first people I had to call to give me strength was Auntie Verna. She was there at the funeral giving me her quiet strength.  This was the first time she spoke to media in this way and discussed governance, alcoholism and Jack Warner ( sorry CNC3) the action gets going at 14:40) . She is an extraordinary woman and, like dad, she is completely fearless. Another regret of many I have is that I never brought her to dad and Myda’s home to see them interact. When I die I want Auntie Verna to ring the bell at my funeral. Crazy Verna my ass – she is the sanest person I know.

How homophobic is Belize? Very apparently.

Following the Obama Administration’s unexpected declaration, as voiced by Hillary Clinton at the UN,  that it is standing up for the rights  of LGBT people worldwide some of the more homophobic nations are showing why that position is more necessary than ever.

Some of the more ignorant voices in Belize, which was specifically mentioned in Clinton’s speech, seems to now have their knickers in a twist over the development.  The headline in Amandala (online) was “US president declares ‘war’ on poor countries”. I kid you not. As is well known, countries like Saudi Arabia are really suffering – which is why they must be allowed to persecute a and  kill LGBT people. The paper also indicated that 80% of Belizeans are in favor of keeping it criminalized – thus illustrating if it’s decency and common sense you want – avoid Belize. Read the rubbish here.

Then yesterday , because being small-minded is really important in Belize, they interviewed their PM Dean Barrow on the subject. Based on his response  their PM is about as enlightened to human rights as a lamppost :

In an interview with Amandala today, Belize Prime Minister Dean Barrow frowned upon a recent indication from United States (US) President Barack Obama last Tuesday, via a presidential memorandum, that the US has declared “combat” against countries that it may deem guilty of violence or discrimination against “lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgender” persons, dubbed LGBT for short—a war which could have implications for foreign aid allocations to poor nations.
Barrow told Amandalathat he has not yet seen the memo himself, but he doesn’t care what it says, as the Government of Belize will not move from its stance.

The Belize Government has decided to defend the law which pronounces unnatural sex illegal and which permits a 10-year prison term for persons found guilty of sodomy. In reality, though, Belizean law enforcement authorities do not prosecute homosexuals, except in cases of rape and the molestation of minors.

As regards to the Government of Belize’s decision “to defend the law on the nation’s statute books,” said Prime Minister Barrow, if the US is saying that it will cut foreign aid to Belize, “they will have to cut off their aid,” Barrow told us.  Read the rest of the ludicrous  exchange here.  ( I suggest you don’t)

.
.
Yes, they simply can’t use the word ‘gay’ in Belize – they must still be waiting for the 1970s to arrive.  So sad that LGBT people – the operative word being PEOPLE – have to live surrounded by such  ignorance and hate.  WTF is  ‘unnatural intercourse’ ?
The links may have died but look! A new one that is even more stupid. http://amandala.com.bz/news/massive-protest-public-morality-toledo-cayo-today/
Really? ‘Transvestite’ ? Again, Belize – what century are you all in again? Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transexual – and also Queer, Questioning, Intersex. Get a grip kids.

A senior speaks out on Stephen Harper

A Canadian senior citizen speaks out about the worst PM Canada has ever had the misfortune of being led by in recent years – admittedly it is a close race with Brian Mulroney and Joe Clark in there.

This is Canada’s greatest Prime Minister in recent memory – 1967 folks -1967!

Globe and Mail: Canada imposes wide range of sanctions against Libya

The Globe and Mail reports that Canada’s second lamest PM in recent history ( only because Mulroney lasted longer) has finally indicated what Canada plans to do about Libya’s regime.

“Mr. Harper said Canada will go beyond the UN resolution.

“Our government will impose an asset freeze on, and a prohibition of financial transactions with the government of Libya, its institutions and agencies, including the Libyan Central Bank.

“These actions will help restrict the movement of, and access to money and weapons for those responsible for the violence against the Libyan people.”

The 192-member UN General Assembly is meeting Tuesday to vote on a UN Human Rights Council recommendation to suspend Libya from the world organization’s top human rights body.

Mr. Harper said Mr. Gadhafi has betrayed his own people.

Is it just me or does it sound like he is gently poking the US to follow the British example?

Wiretapping – scary stuff.

Revelations were made in T&T”s parliament today by Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar that extensive illegal wiretapping was taking place in the country by a semi-secret state organization that was put in place by the previous cabinet. I think the right to privacy is as fundamental a right as any and I am thus posting her statement here.

“WIRETAPPING NET CAST FAR AND WIDE

No one escaped this secret wire tapping operation as a net was inexplicably cast very far and wide.

Subjects included:

Members of the judiciary,

trade unionists,

Editors and journalists,

media houses,

radio talk-show hosts,

comedians,

persons in the entertainment industry,

former opposition MP’s,

government Ministers,

sports personalities,

businessmen,

newspaper columnists,

advertising executives,

county councillors,

lawyers and

in some cases, the children of such persons.

Such activity cannot be condoned as it represents a clear and present danger to our democracy.

Words cannot express the deep sense of personal outrage and hurt I feel about this matter.

Such an unwarranted and unjustified invasion of citizen’s privacy is a cause for alarm.

Why on earth would a government wish to engage in such unproductive illegal activity when the country was under siege as a result of criminal activity?”
